Some of you might have seen my post on Shinsen or gg’s site already (P.S. Thanks for the free advertisement, gg). For those who haven’t, I have a plea to make.
As many of you know, I’ve worked on several projects with Chihiro over the past 16 months. However, I currently find myself at a difficult and desperate point. I currently owe my university $2127 for this semester, and if I don’t pay it off by November 20th, I won’t be able to register for classes for next semester. I’ve maxed out my government financial aid, I’ve spent all the money in my bank account toward tuition, I can’t get any private loans because of my family’s terrible credit history, and my parents can’t help me because they don’t have any money to spare after paying their bills. So, as a last-ditch effort, I’m asking you, the loyal (and not-so-loyal) supporters of Chihiro, to help me in my hour of need. Every little bit that you can chip in would help. November 20 is the class registration date for next semester. I can technically get the money in after that (as long as it’s before next semester starts), but I might not be able to take some of the classes I need next semester if they fill up. (The way they did it was by placing a hold on my account, so I can’t register for next semester’s classes until I pay off this semester.)
Also, I’ll make some sort of graph/chart/thing to show the progress and post the link when it’s ready.

I’ve been to the financial aid office, and all they had to suggest was the standard stuff, fill out FAFSA (did that a long time ago), apply for goverment loans (did it), look for scholarships (applied for a bunch, didn’t get accepted for any), get an on-campus job (which I did, but it’s part-time and minimum wage, so it only helps so much), and apply for private loans (all of which I got rejected from). I’m actually lucky because I’m already on a payment plan type of system. If I wasn’t, I would’ve had to have it paid in full 3 months ago. I did go down there again today to try to talk to them, but they just had me schedule an appointment for tomorrow morning. I guess that’s what happens in a bureaucratic system… -_-;

What about Alumni associations? Maybe one of them has an assistance program that can help. Another thing to check out may be your states DoE. Also, check with local credit unions in addition to the banks. If your grades are high and you’re in good with the profs, maybe one of them will be willing to help plead your case to FA.

here’s an idea as well. i know its not good under short time frames but check this site out. http://www.collegeanswer.com its a scholarship search engine. i know you said you search and applied but this site will give you a lot more results. also come time for next term. get your FAFSA done ASAP. some schools have priority deadlines. there is federal aid that is first come first serve bases. also, does your FAFSA classify you as dependant or independant. if your dependant, have your parents fill out a parent plus loan. doesn’t matter if they are approved or not. if approved that can cover you for the rest of the school and it can be setup to where payments are postponed after you graduate period (even if you go to grad school). if denied, the school can give you additional stafford loans. the amount depends on your grade level.

I hate to play the heartless bastard (and I really do because I love Chihiro) but even if we were to believe your story, for which we have ample reason to doubt, do you really think you could generate over 2k from the community in just 10 days? The server donation goal which is just 150ish dollars is generated over a whole month.
I sympathize for your situation, being a poor college student myself, but you are asking for a miracle. I’d feel more inclined to donate if you could provide some proof.

My advice, get a job. I’m working 40hours per week to pay off my tuition. All your money your getting for free, even now. All that gov aid is from my tax dollars that I’m working my butt off to earn. Lol, this is the times when I really feel it is good to be Norwegian. We get our College education for free(in terms of money, not effort. Duh). The Government pays the cost for the education itself for us. ^^ Offcourse, alot of students still have to get a student loan in order to pay for living expenses and such if they don’t live at home, but you know what? The Government ALSO turns up to 40% of this loan into money we don’t have to pay back, if we pass exams. Kind of like an award for our effots, since they want us to get educated, for the sake of the country I guess. So yeah, it’s nice to not have to pay hundreds of thousands just to get an education. ^^ But I feel for you dude, though at the rate this is going, it looks like you won’t have much trouble getting the money you need through the donations. As someone allready said, more than half is there allready, after only 1 day. ;D

Chihiro fans are surprisingly generous, considering you’d think they’d all be poor otaku (lol). It usually only takes about 2 days to reach our monthly server donation goal.
And I do have a job, but it’s only 20 hours a week (the uni has restrictions that say I can’t work any more than that during classes) and minimum wage. Not a whole lot of money.
Though in this economy I’m lucky to have any job, I suppose.

Auch. I’m currently living in Japan as an exchange student and I couldn’t have come here if my grandfather hadn’t coughed up something like 4k+ euro’s to get me here… and that wasn’t even the full price…
For 2000 dollars you can move to belgium, become a belgian citizen, get your 3 to 5 year education for as good as free (if europe passes that pretty education bill it will be absolutely free) and your living expenses won’t change for a bit.
And the best news is as far as I know Belgian degrees count as much in America as they do in Belgium.
Think of all the chocolate and waffles you could be eating in stead of working your ass off to be able to study like a maniac

Right now I’m taking a social psych course (PSYCH 316) plus a bunch of core curriculum courses (English, math, history). It’s only my first semester, so I really haven’t gotten into my major courses yet (my major being psychology).

Story sounds painfully believable to me. Heck, I might easily find myself in same situation one day.
$2000 at, say, $10/hour is barely a few months of part time work. I’ve not been following Chihiro too much, but if it was a paid job, I bet it would be hard to stay an active member and NOT earn at least as much by now.
So it’s really not that outrageous of a request, and there’s probably a better chance of the money being used properly than some random local save-the-dying-kittens charity.

I’m a first semester too. Here in Germany the fees are “only” about 500 Euros per semester. And ppl were protesting a lot when those were first introduced. And there are still political parties trying to abolish those…
A good way of earning money is tutoring highschoolers or so. I just started a week ago and I get 15 Euros/hour! I’m only working 4 hours a week though.

See, this would be a violation of “fansub ethics” (I didn’t know there was such a thing in the first place, seeing as how fansubbing is illegal) if I said “You can’t download our fansubs unless you pay me.” Asking for donations is completely different. And the difference is, I had shitty grades in high school because I thought fansubbing would be a better use of my time (because let’s face it, high school is a waste of time–anyone who’s been to an American high school can attest to this), so I didn’t qualify for a lot of scholarships. Right now, I have A’s in all my college courses, so, I imagine a 4.0 would have a lot more scholarships available for next semester (once official transcripts for this semester come out).

This is a disgusting way to make money. It strikes most with an impression that by allowing soichiro post on your site, you’re making a share of his profit. As a post second graduate, I find it extremely difficult to believe that any state would not be able to fully fund university ed. There’re scenerios of what you said may happen. ONE: You failing your course, in which case your “university” is not talking to the bank for you. TWO: You lied two paragraphs of worth. THREE: You’re trying to make one last scam on the anime community before you change your nick or quit fansubbing. FOUR: Chihiro/SHS is on this with you and GG is angry at you for that.

Soichiro, reconsider majoring in psychology – do you really, *really* want to study it? An undergraduate degree in psychology in the United States is worth next to nothing. I happen to know, having graduated with a BA in something slightly less worthless after $30,000 USD in student loans.
My computer science courses were more useful, and 100% more relevant to my current job.

Welcome to the internet. Its a place where all different types of people gather. A place where people can make up a story to fool others when really its not true. Its also a place where fools gather, cryin over a fake story and decide to help someone they dont know, the fact they dont even know if its true or not, but rather decide based on a story told many times over……. Its also a good place to start a career in becoming a conartist.

Also, over here we pay our uni fees yearly – all of them. Are classes really paid for at a semester at a time? I never knew that :/

Yes they are. I pay just under $3,000 per quarter at my school, not including books, parking, living, etc… We are supposed to pay a few weeks before classes start but they will allow you to defer payments for a short time.

If thats the limit of your debt think yourself lucky! I owe a hell of a lot more and have been off work with a severely broken shoulder since may last year and no sick payments! I may even lose my home because of it!

And I’m attending Ball State University right now. It’s around $8,000 a semester total. And yes, I’m sure I really want to study psychology. I enjoy it, and it can be useful for all sorts of professions. I wanted to do CS for a long time, until I worked at a programming job over the summer and found out how mind-numbingly boring it is. Besides, even if I do need a masters to really do much with it, at least it’s still more useful than an English or Art degree. :p

They dont get paid for yall getting animes, or taking their time out to encode it, time it, translate it, none of that, yet week after week they do it and we get the enjoyment of their hard work. Have you once thought of giving back to them? Oh thats right, you cant charge for fansubs, humm why? Oh yeah cause the author of the anime wont get their money, which means that all the yapping like little leg humping dogs was for nothing, because your hands are no where near clean, before you start talking about right and wrong, delete all the fansubbed animes you have off your computer, along with all the porn, software etc.. Than go out and buy it legally, than when you come in here than you can speak all high and mighty cause right now, you to me are like theives complaining about someone looks like they might steal. Crazy thing is, I dont have much to give and live paycheck to paycheck while going to school and taking care of my daughter yet if I got a extra 5 spot I dont feel its nothing wrong with giving to people who do me a favor. Your the type of people to ask for a ride somewhere way out of the way and than get mad cause the person asked for gas money, man get a life and go play in traffic!

Yet you have time to be on the internet, not only downloading animes for free which is illegal since you want to talk about morals etc. Plus for someone who is about to lose their home, your sitting on a computer, not looking for a job but downloading anime and having time to talk out the side of your neck about something someone else is supposed to be doing wrong and for anyone with common sense you would know that you need a broadband connection in order to get these animes so instead of turning off your internet you rather have animes and whatever you choose to download instead of trying to save the roof over your head. I have a job and will return to it as soon as I have recovered, I am currently waiting for a bone graft on my shoulder. My partner works and pays the internet fees. I am looking at various solutions to my own financial situation, none of which involve begging from strangers on the internet!
Yes I am downloading anime illegally, so are you. I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment and watching anime helps fill that time as it is very hard to do much when you can’t use one arm!
I appreciate the work Sochiro and others do in the fansubbing community, but I don’t think that anyone should ask for money from strangers on the grounds that they provide a free service of their own free-will! Sochiro choses to spend his free time subbing anime unpaid, a better use of his time would be a job to pay his fees. Of course I would prefer him to continue his subbing, but in reality we all have to do things we would rather not do.

My favorite part of this whole exercise is that the people who donated to Soichiro are presumably the same people who can\’t be bothered to pay $6 for a Crunchyroll subscription to watch their animes (or insert your favorite DVD company here, etc.).
Fansubbers don\’t buy LDs and DVDs and blu-rays anymore, they download isos and .ts.
You guys won\’t support the medium you seem to enjoy so much, but you\’ll happily give money to a scammer looking for a trip to Japan and/or too lazy and disorganized to plan ahead and realize he needed $1100 and change to extend his studies.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves. At least when DB did this, they donated the thousands of extra funds to Doctors Without Borders and dropped Naruto when an R1 company picked it up.

@ the above comment, R1 is all well and good but its harder to get dvds when you are in Europe, you have to import ones from Japan and have no subs or get them from America and not be able to play them. (I’m probably wrong but hey I can’t find many anime DVD’s here in the uk)
I’m all for supporting the industry as I’m sure most others are. In regards to asking for donations on the internet, if you don’t ask you don’t get so yeah I wont be donating but I’m all for it

If I was forced to pay to download anime I wouldn’t complain. However donations to support fansubbing groups are voluntary, and I choose whether or not I wish to pay. However that is not the issue. Someone is asking for money to pay their tuition fees, they knew they would have to be paid and yet they have no money, forward planning is a wonderful thing!
If I could translate and encode myself I would not be here. And if the DVD’s were available in the UK I probably would purchase them, however anime is not widely available here and current series are probably not going to be available for over a year.
You say it’s like asking for petrol money (or gas as you americans say) and that would be true if he was asking us to donate for server fees, but he isn’t! I appreciate the work he does as a fansubber but if he wants to get an education he should pay his own fees, unless he’s going to pay us back when he graduates? Somehow I doubt that!

As amusing as these posts are, maybe people could see that a little generosity and compassion for others during a pretty tough time, historically speaking, in the US. No one is forcing you to donate; no one is forcing you to read the damned post. And yes, before someone gets offended (more…), freedome of speech, for those of you whose countries supports such things, applies and you may say whatever you so choose; at least idiocy remains free in all countries.
But you know, just because you may have (or have had) it tougher than X, Y, Z person, doesn’t mean you automatically win the lottery of life sucks.
