Thanks for subbing this great series. Sorry you’re dropping it. I do wish you’d hold off on officially dropping the show however, at least until seeing how CR does with their subs. But I guess licensed means licensed, and don’t want to get in legal trouble, regardless.
Thanks again for all your work on this great show!
can’t people shut up about “please continue” “please release a subtitle file” please do this, please do that…show got licenced, no matter the medium, it got licensed. If chihiro wants to stop subbing to support the release, more power to them, and ask tadashi how fun it was to get a second C&D for releasing the .ass file for soul eater…legality of fansubs in it’s entirety is going through some changes…stop whining.
i have only recently picked this series up for enjoyment and now something like this happens. i don’t blame chihiro-subs for dropping this, however, i doubt the possibility of making money through licensing this anime for online episode streaming. The world is undergoing recession again if many of you still don’t realize. A majority of people will go all out looking for fansubs, be it chihiro or not. And those “whining” like what ipsofacto mentions are practically evidence of what i’m explaining here… As for legality, some fansubs don’t care. I haven’t seen Dattebayo drop Bleach even after it was licensed more than a year ago. Nobody cares about the legality in the first place. Companies license them just to make products (like DVDs) to make extra cash. It’s not like everyone who are fans of Skip Beat! buys the DVDs. Only a fraction will do so. And these companies are just looking at those fraction of people buying the DVDs. If you really want to support this anime, it makes more sense to buy the manga rather than the DVDs as it keeps the mangaka going, which means that the series will last longer. Anyway, this is just my opinion on this matter. Good job, chihiro fansubs!
Well thats the biggest hurdle of CR new “revolution” it has now introduced region locking, I could understand this on DVD’s as there are various reasons to name one would be special exclusives, but for online anime? I’m at question big time considering the nature of the internet, I don’t see why they have to start region locking on the net? Can anyone reason that out for me? But yeah, thanks a lot for the great work I enjoyed following the series with your subs.
“i doubt the possibility of making money through licensing this anime for online episode streaming”
- I already paid for it and so did many others who actually feel they should support the creators of a decent series.
“Companies license them just to make products (like DVDs)”
- No one licensed this show. Original creators are selling it online therefore a great deal of money actually makes it back to them which they can use to make another great series. Too hard to comprehend? And there still won’t be any crappy cheap R1 DVDs unless an American distributor actually buys the license.
“It’s not like everyone who are fans of Skip Beat! buys the DVDs. Only a fraction will do so.”
- If someone doesn’t buy the show, why the hell should the creators or anyone else for that matter care for him? Stupid parasite.

“omg … CR is …… wad not avalible in certain regions … wow T.T”
- Skip Beat! and other exclusive series WILL BE AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE except Japan. Series which are restricted to your country probably have a license holder there which doesn’t allow CR to stream it online. Not the case with Skip Beat.
“I’m at question big time considering the nature of the internet, I don’t see why they have to start region locking on the net?”
- Look at the answer above.
I still have hope there are people who see eye to eye with me on this matter. At this point I want to thank Chihiro for subbing Skip Beat this far. Without the popularity your sub created there probably wouldn’t be a chance for me to legally watch/obtain it in my country. Thanks o.ob
Thank you very much for this episode!
Subs are messed up a little in 18:43 but your work is still great!
Thank you again and I’m looking forward to the last episode!
Skye you didn’t have to be an ass about what people said, REALLY.
Yeah I am sad about the drop and I would have to agreen on the point that about a fraction of the populace will but the DVD and will search the internet top to bottom for the episodes for free but hey shit happens get over it’s done. Thanks much for the great subs Chihiro staff.
Yo, I have no problem with paying for anime, but some companies are fokin retarded. They license anime, make shitty dub and ask money for shit they didn’t even put lil effort in. Excuse, but are you really going to sub episode 13? @Sanguis,
“however, i doubt the possibility of making money through licensing this anime for online episode streaming” Crunchroll seems to have thought of this idea, and its seems to be working for them.. I am sure quite a few anime fans out there will buy the CR premium for the HD releases, and to show support to the publishers
“Nobody cares about the legality in the first place”, Tell this to Odex, who fined fans up to $5000 for downloading licensed anime, or to a few raw uploaders in japan that have got arrested for uploading. Long story short.. yes, people do care about legality, mainly those enforcing the laws >.>
“If you really want to support this anime, it makes more sense to buy the manga rather than the DVDs as it keeps the mangaka going”,
DVD sales create revenue for the publishers.. and as such, serves as a source of income for the animating studios.. Remember that the guys that release the manga, aren’t necessarily the people who publishes the anime.
I have been to CR and looked at the animes. They are poor quality subs, and when I tried to download a copy of one that may or maynot have been subbed by them, I was asked for a donation. I was not allowed to download without said donation, sounds like buying a copy of a fan sub.
Silverthorn: yes you have to be a paying member of CR to download. That’s kind of the point, you know, generating revenue.
DVD sales are important since the overhead is high and profit margins are very slim for anime. Companies can only make profit by sales of DVDs as well as figures/posters/whatever collector type items. International distribution means extra overhead for translations, dubbing, import taxes and such. I don’t have a lot of money to spend, but I do try and buy anime I really like. Although, I was very disappointed with the subtitles for Lucky Star, they really sucked when compared to the fansubs. This is my concern with CR also. If they cheap out on the translations, there’s no way I’m gonna pay for that.

CR will be only providing the distribution,. The subtitling will be done by the Japanese producers. They are subtitling Skip Beat even now in english for the Taiwanese Okto TV, which airs it simultaneously with the Japan premiere.
Anyways, thanks for the great efforts with Skip Beat, Chihiro!
For your info, releasing ASS files is not illegal.
The fact you didn’t released copyrighted data, since the translation is totally done by someone who had the time for it.
Tadashi falling for the second C&D and even accepting, is stupid.
The orginal video data is not being released, you could see it like torrent files.
Power2All’s got a point, an ass file is just a text file with numbers and text. It’s in no way altering the original anime video. It’s not like you guys would be the ones muxing it together.

Ahhh, thanks Hadji, I was unaware of that. It makes me feel better at least that CR isn’t stealing fansubbers hard work to make money. At least for this series.
funny all those point of view… being paid for translating doesn’t mean you’re a pro, and doesn’t mean you do a better job…
it’s just a money story, licensing, providing, …
it’s pretty kind to try to find excuses, but it’s just a matter of money, and that’s all.
they won’t provide you a better quality sub, they won’t provide your anime faster, they really don’t care about you, it’s just money.
it’s frustrating for us, sub leechers, when a serie is licensed, it’s not shameful to say it.
we all download lots of illegal things, and we don’t care, so having a speech about legality, it’s stupid.
a fansub even without license is illegal.
we all do like we don’t know, or like we don’t care.
but it’s illegal.
companies just tolerate it, cause japanese people who got the rights don’t care about foreigners market. but tolerate is not meaning it’s legal.
I get the point from chihiro, I worked for a sub team, the dilemma is easy, we don’t want trouble for something we did for free, even if it’s a little chance we got trouble. I’m not complaining, even if, like I said before, US licensing is really painful for us foreigners, cause it’s not our licensing, but we have to be casualities.
I just want to show you that, there’s no point about arguing together, everybody forget the main points.
Regarding the .ass I don’t know, maybe your laws are less drastic than mine, I wouldn’t mind if kind people would provide it to us leechers.
Regardless, thanks chihiro for subbing skip beat this far.
“For your info, releasing ASS files is not illegal.
The fact you didn’t released copyrighted data, since the translation is totally done by someone who had the time for it.”
- Translations fall into the category of derivative works. Parody/made-up translations are fine since they don’t convey any original meaning but obviously that ‘s not the case here. I’m no expert in US law but still; prove me wrong.
@nyan
I leech fansubs because I live in a shitty country where anime falls into the category of children’s cartoons and where anyone capable of purchasing a license doesn’t give a sh*t about it. I on the other hand want to give something to the industry in return and because I can’t get anything locally I have to order overseas which costs a ton of extra money. Those Japanese publishers that decided to stream anime online gave viewers such as myself a chance to legally enjoy their products. CR is just a middleman here – all it provides is a streaming service much like YouTube. Japanese publishers are in charge of translating and uploading the content.
People… people! Listen, this decision is pretty much final. We appreciate that you have been, and still are, watching our fansubs. I, personally, have already bought CR premium membership – simply because I want to support the company who is producing Skip Beat!. I don’t want to support CR and their poor quality but I want to support the company, who surely is getting some money for the deal with CR.
Some groups doesn’t care about license(batsu or Teki-> Shikabane Hime aka)^^…or you guys work with other groups together..
or just give us the script and we must learn with Aegisub(great) to make subtitles^^
Or is a bad joke about dropping?.
Crunchyroll is just another narutofan.com it’s not even a anime dvd releasing company in the usa they just are able to stream episodes on the internet with out getting sued i see no point in dropping it.
“For your info, releasing ASS files is not illegal.

I’m no expert in law but happens to be studying it in an introductory level so i can be very wrong~ but I don’t think a pure text file can be considered a derivative work, as in this case the work itself that was created by one is a video file of moving pictures, it is very hard to justify that an ASS file that consist of numbers and texts is a copy, or a modified version, or the work produced is primarily copied from the said work. It may be that the file happens to match exactly what the characters says in the video, but since copyright protects the distribution of the work instead of the idea itself, i doubt it would be illegal to take the “idea” and reproduce it in a very different format. Again, i can be totally wrong
just want to say thanks for subbing so far, totally understood your decision and I guess i’ll have to stick to the raws and practice my JP listening… ~
All that nonsense aside, I hope you all have a very good new year and I look forward to all that the future can bring us. Instead of lamenting those things we cannot change, let’s welcome the opportunities offered by the future opening up before us. Thank you, Chihiro, for all that you do.
By the way the release of episode 12 version 2 is not from a troll, but from someone, probably a Chihiro-fan, who is kind enough to fix the timing issues which begins at 00:18:34.
thanks 4all the episodes you’ve released until now. we’ll miss this show, but i guess we’ll get to see the rest of the episodes eventually, one way or another. you guys did a great job!~ <3
Even if I follow the point about giving my support to producers with money, I can’t stand streaming. When CR will consider offering a download service, I’ll pay for sure. I’m not that greedy.
We may be from the same country after all Skye.
Nope DDL is separate from the Premium Membership, for the shows they offer DDL you don’t need to have premium membership to purchase ddl, but the premium membership does have 480p and 720p streaming which looks pretty good, not great but watchable at least. Anyways Thanks Chihiro for subbing Skip Beat, I too have the premium membership, but will be watching ep 13 from you guys.
You know, I just glanced at CR’s ep12 (H264), and it wasn’t that bad, sub-wise. Sure, better video quality is a perk, but it’s not paramount. Timing was good, translations were spot-on…I think we should give it a chance. I just feel bad for people with crappy internet connections.
Sorry to have you go, Chihiro! It was fun while it lasted. Skip Beat! is my favorite shoujo manga ever, so seeing it through you guys has been a pleasure.
Thanks for fansubbing this, and thank you for stopping fansubbing in order to support the original company. Hopefully people who are true fans of this series, and whose IPs aren’t blocked, will go to CR and support those who made this anime for them. The 720p eps look great. I’ve already bought my membership.

Excuse, but are you really going to sub episode 13? It’s just that that episode is going to be aired in Japan on the 11th of January, due to the fact that the next week (4th of January) is going to be the new year break for Skip Beat. If that really is true, will this in fact be the last episode subbed by you guys?”
Episode 13 aired on the 28th.

Got a source for that bit of info, Skye? My understanding was that CR would be asking for translations from it’s subscribers and rewarding them not with pay but with CR download points or whatever. At any rate, I’ve not seen any site saying CR uses professionals and what subs they do provide seem to originate with fansubbers

December 30th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
I enjoyed the show while it lasted and I thank Chihiro for the sub for the time it lasted. Also, will be sticking with you guys no matter what.
December 30th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
Power2All’s got a point, an ass file is just a text file with numbers and text. It’s in no way altering the original anime video. It’s not like you guys would be the ones muxing it together.

Ahhh, thanks Hadji, I was unaware of that. It makes me feel better at least that CR isn’t stealing fansubbers hard work to make money. At least for this series.

1 to go…….
December 31st, 2008 at 9:01 am
sub error at the 18:30 – 18:50 pointsof the xvid. no subs for 10 secs then 3-4 lines bunched up.
December 31st, 2008 at 9:05 am
funny all those point of view… being paid for translating doesn’t mean you’re a pro, and doesn’t mean you do a better job…
it’s just a money story, licensing, providing, …
it’s pretty kind to try to find excuses, but it’s just a matter of money, and that’s all.
they won’t provide you a better quality sub, they won’t provide your anime faster, they really don’t care about you, it’s just money.
it’s frustrating for us, sub leechers, when a serie is licensed, it’s not shameful to say it.
we all download lots of illegal things, and we don’t care, so having a speech about legality, it’s stupid.
a fansub even without license is illegal.
we all do like we don’t know, or like we don’t care.
but it’s illegal.
companies just tolerate it, cause japanese people who got the rights don’t care about foreigners market. but tolerate is not meaning it’s legal.

Chihiro,
Thank you for working hard supplying us with fansubs. I’m sorry you have to quit doing this series. Hope to see more work from you guys soon!

“For your info, releasing ASS files is not illegal.

- Translations fall into the category of derivative works. Parody/made-up translations are fine since they don’t convey any original meaning but obviously that ‘s not the case here. I’m no expert in US law but still; prove me wrong.
@nyan

December 31st, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Some groups doesn’t care about license(batsu or Teki-> Shikabane Hime aka)^^…or you guys work with other groups together..
or just give us the script and we must learn with Aegisub(great) to make subtitles^^
Or is a bad joke about dropping?.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Crunchyroll is just another narutofan.com it’s not even a anime dvd releasing company in the usa they just are able to stream episodes on the internet with out getting sued i see no point in dropping it.

Happy New Year!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE! =D
January 1st, 2009 at 10:38 am
@Thander: We didn’t release said file so it must be a troll, the links on our page always represent our latest version – in this case there’s no v2.
January 1st, 2009 at 1:43 pm
@windstar:
Anyway I downloaded it, it seem that the (V2) is just the same Ep but uploaded to Nyaa tracker !!
And the CRC is changed..!!

don’t u bitches whine anymore. Chihiro sub what they fucking want when they fucking want how they fucking want
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:58 am
@ everyone!
Happy New Year!!!
By the way the release of episode 12 version 2 is not from a troll, but from someone, probably a Chihiro-fan, who is kind enough to fix the timing issues which begins at 00:18:34.
January 2nd, 2009 at 4:18 pm
thanks 4all the episodes you’ve released until now. we’ll miss this show, but i guess we’ll get to see the rest of the episodes eventually, one way or another. you guys did a great job!~ <3
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Even if I follow the point about giving my support to producers with money, I can’t stand streaming. When CR will consider offering a download service, I’ll pay for sure. I’m not that greedy.
We may be from the same country after all Skye.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Crunchyroll already have sub up to ep12. May be it’s time to quit?

I thought that was one of the perks of premium membership was that you could d/l the eps.
January 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 am
@ tubbo
Nope DDL is separate from the Premium Membership, for the shows they offer DDL you don’t need to have premium membership to purchase ddl, but the premium membership does have 480p and 720p streaming which looks pretty good, not great but watchable at least. Anyways Thanks Chihiro for subbing Skip Beat, I too have the premium membership, but will be watching ep 13 from you guys.
January 3rd, 2009 at 3:13 am
You know, I just glanced at CR’s ep12 (H264), and it wasn’t that bad, sub-wise. Sure, better video quality is a perk, but it’s not paramount. Timing was good, translations were spot-on…I think we should give it a chance. I just feel bad for people with crappy internet connections.
Sorry to have you go, Chihiro! It was fun while it lasted. Skip Beat! is my favorite shoujo manga ever, so seeing it through you guys has been a pleasure.
Happy new year!
January 4th, 2009 at 5:15 am
Thanks for fansubbing this, and thank you for stopping fansubbing in order to support the original company. Hopefully people who are true fans of this series, and whose IPs aren’t blocked, will go to CR and support those who made this anime for them. The 720p eps look great. I’ve already bought my membership.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:04 am
You guys should not only sub the anime also the OP’s and ED’s of the anime. But then again many thanks for doing this ;D
January 7th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
say if i were to donate to YOU guys… would you still sub skip beat? would ya? would ya? if not.. it was worth the shot of asking…
January 8th, 2009 at 4:46 am
Not very enthusiastic, are we now?
Why aren’t you fansubbers the least bit disappointed in the discontinuation of the series? :/

… would you still sub skip beat?
I doubt they would, since CR has legal rights to digital distribution now. They could cause legal trouble for fansubbers and so you’d have to pay Chihiro more than CR could hurt them for to even make the offer tempting.
January 9th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Cr=Just Suckers
with new rules in Cr the most members they deserting Cr “Sigh”
until if i’m rich,,I do not going paying any Dollar for CR for watching my anime in suck screen >..<;;
January 10th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Thank you for subbing skip beat. Your translations were great and i never had any problems with playback from your downloads. I am almost sorry to see it going legit. if it means having to wait longer.
