@Brian:
"dreaded" MKV? ya mind explainin' that one?

MKV is just as convertible from as AVI is, given you're not using an out of date program.

IF you're re-compressing the 720p releases down to 480p, then yes, you're right, the output AVI will be smaller, but with x264, at the same resolution and framerate, it will compress smaller than XviD. 640x480@24fps for ~24minutes compresses to ~150 - 200MB using XviD, whereas with x264, I've gotten it down to 100MB with no loss in quality. that's 7 episodes per CD, or 43-44 per single layer DVD, or 87-88 per dual layer DVD. and, again, is just as re-convertible as XviD, given you're not using an out of date program.

you don't NEED to hard-sub going from MKV to AVI, you only have to extract the sub file from the MKV and keep it in the same folder as the resultant AVI. and if hard subbing is taking you three re-compression passes, you're doing something very, very wrong.

the only real reason to actually want the XviD/AVIs anymore is if your computer is too slow to handle x264, or you're using a set-top box which doesn't support x264, or you've got limited bandwidth or download caps (*smack* pay a better ISP), otherwise the x264/MKVs are the better choice, no matter what.

uguu... You guys are mean.
I'm one who only watches the Xvid ones.
1. The file size is smaller.
2. Its not in the dreaded Mkv format.
3. Easily reconvertable.
The only reason that i get the Xvid is because they are in the avi format. Which makes it loads easier to convert from. Since you don't have to mess with all the other separate container streams then remux them and hard sub the video which you end up recompressing the video around three times before its in the correct avi container and has the same quality as the h264 mkv.

P.S. I can play h264 files with no problem at all, just think of it as a waste of resources. And I have a C2D 2.6ghz oc'd to 3.4ghz so reconverting doesn't take too long, its just a time consuming process.

I didn't say it was a necessity, but holding back an h.264 release until the Xvid is done seems pointless, and the only reason I can think of as to why they would do so is that people who can't play h.264 would not be upset.

as qwerty said, there is almost no difference between the two besides the fact that h.264 looks a bit better but eats up a bit more system resources, so theres no reason to still watch Xvid when h.264 is around, unless you have problems with h.264 playing because of your hardware and/or are too dumb to use a player that works correctly.

--- Not everyone has the leisure and
--- financial means to get a better computer.
Everyone have 100$-200$ per year for a little upgrade, the word "upgrade" does not mean you should by the coolest brand new PC every month...

--- there is nothing wrong with people
--- wanting to watch XviD
I agree, nothing wrong.
It's just a little bit unusual for those who love to watch videos, not try to get the best of it.

(sorry for my english)

Computer upgrade is not a necessity in life. Not everyone has the leisure and financial means to get a better computer.

So therefore, there is nothing wrong with people wanting to watch XviD.

PS: I watch h.264, incase someone is going to flame me for having a shitty computer and whatnot.

if you don't see a difference then woulden't you download h.264 if it was available way before the xvid? (h.264 is done now at 11:30am, but they're waiting to release the h.264 until the Xvid is done at 2pm? blahhhhh)
